The CHICO

This is the fundamental, “signature” rhythm of the candombe, and it remains constant. It is played on the highest tuned drum. It is very difficult to "feel" it at high speeds because of the empty downbeat. The tamborileros, when playing the Chico, bring their left hand way up for an extremely loud slap that is even stronger than the stick stroke.

x S O O x S O O :II

There is also what is called the "Chico repicado", in which you play every beat. Sometimes it is used as a variation or instead of the normal Chico,

O S O O O S O O :II

Now, with a partner, try to put together this part with the Piano part and you will have the fundamental feel of Candombe.
